Bra Brand Size Comparison FAQ
Bra sizing isn't standardized across brands. Differences occur due to varying measuring methods (some add inches, others don't), where the brand is based (US vs UK vs EU sizing), cup shape and depth, band stretchiness, and the brand's target market. A brand targeting younger customers may size differently than one targeting mature women. This is why the same "34C" can fit completely differently at Victoria's Secret vs. ThirdLove vs. Panache.
Victoria's Secret tends to run small, particularly in the band. VS uses an outdated "+4" measuring method that often puts women in a larger band and smaller cup than they actually need. Their size range is also limited (32-40 bands, up to DDD). Many women discover they've been wearing the wrong size for years after being fitted elsewhere. If your VS bra feels tight, you may actually need a smaller band and larger cup at other stores.
ThirdLove offers half cup sizes (B½, C½, D½, etc.) for women who fall between standard cup sizes. Research shows about 50% of women are between sizes. If a B cup is too small and C gaps at the top, a B½ provides the perfect fit. This is unique to ThirdLove. Their Fit Finder quiz can help determine if you need a half size. It's one reason ThirdLove has become so popular among women frustrated with standard sizing.
Runs Small: Victoria's Secret, Natori, Simone Pérèle, Savage X Fenty, Calvin Klein
True to Size: ThirdLove, Wacoal, Aerie, Chantelle, Elomi, CUUP
Runs Large/Stretchy Bands: Freya, some Target brands, Torrid
Firm Bands (may want to size up): Panache, Curvy Kate
UK brands offer the widest ranges:
- Elomi: 32-48 bands, up to UK O cup
- Panache: 28-40 bands, up to UK K cup
- Goddess: 34-48 bands, up to UK N cup
- Curvy Kate: 28-44 bands, D-K cups
- Bravissimo: 28-40 bands, D-L cups
US brands: ThirdLove (30-48 bands, AA-I cups), Lane Bryant/Cacique (34-50 bands, B-K cups).
Band sizes are the same in US and UK. Cup sizes differ after D:
- US DD = UK DD
- US DDD/F = UK E
- US G = UK F
- US H = UK FF
- US I = UK G
- US J = UK GG
- US K = UK H
UK brands (Panache, Freya, Curvy Kate, Elomi) all use UK sizing. Always convert your size before ordering from UK brands.
For D+ cups, UK brands excel because they're designed specifically for larger busts:
- Panache: Excellent support, firm bands, projected cups
- Elomi: Plus-size specialist, exceptional comfort
- Freya: Stylish options, great for full-on-top shapes
- Curvy Kate: D-K cups only, fun colorful designs
US options: ThirdLove (to I cup), Lane Bryant/Cacique (plus-size specialist), Wacoal (to H cup).
Studies consistently show 70-85% of women wear incorrectly fitted bras. This happens because:
- Outdated measuring methods still used by many stores (like the "+4" method)
- No standardization between brands - sizes mean different things
- Wearing the same size for years without re-measuring
- Limited size availability pushing women into wrong sizes
- Not knowing signs of poor fit
The most common mistake: wearing a band too large and cup too small. Getting properly fitted can dramatically improve comfort and appearance.
Both Savage X Fenty and Victoria's Secret run slightly small, but Savage X offers a much wider and more inclusive size range (30-46 bands, A-H cups vs VS's 32-40 bands, A-DDD). Savage X is known for trendier, bolder designs and more diverse marketing. If your VS size fits well, you'll likely need the same or one size up at Savage X. Savage X also tends to have more stretch in their bands.
Measure your bra size every 6-12 months, or after:
- Weight fluctuation (gain or loss of 10+ pounds)
- Pregnancy and postpartum
- Starting or stopping hormonal birth control
- Menopause
- Your current bras become uncomfortable
The average woman changes bra sizes 6 times in her life. Regular measuring ensures optimal comfort and support.
